Over the holidays I didn’t avoid work completely like I was thinking I would. Instead I spent some time doing some research on a specific individual that has been popping up all over the place in my world.

The individual I’m speaking about is Michael Drew, an uber-successful book publisher based out of Austin, Texas.

Michael has book publishing broke down to a fine science. Following the system he’s mastered, he’s put over 65 books on national best seller lists.

Business Inspiration from McDonalds

Today’s inspiration comes from the Golden Arches of McDonalds. I actually worked at a McDonalds when I was a teenager; it was one of my first jobs. Now I know lots of people are probably chuckling to themselves right now, but I have to admit, looking back on it now, it was one of the best experiences that I could have enjoyed. Why?

McDonalds does billions of dollars in sales every year, being run by a bunch of pimply-faced teenagers and a handful of immigrants who speak English as a second language. Now I will admit that their level of customer service and their speed and quality of food service have all taken a dive since the days when I worked there; but the fact that individual restaurants still rake in millions of dollars every year is an impressive feat.

You’re familiar with 3M Post-It Notes right? Have you ever heard how they came to be? Let me fill you in…

Spencer Silver, a chemist that was working in the 3M lab, was trying to create a new glue; a glue that was exceptionally strong that would fuse two parts together and never come apart.

Well, after mixing simple organic molecules in an odd proportion during an experiment in 1968, he ended up with a glue that did the exact opposite of what he was trying to create. The glue he created didn’t fuse anything together at all. It was definitely tacky, but it would also easily let go.
